Resident and Community Priorities
We started setting resident and community priorities for future years at our March 2017 AGM meeting.
These annual contributions and targets from Residents and Service Providers are categorised below.
The committee are regularly working with local groups and young people to help focus this feedback and contribute into future scheme actions and exciting live projects.
All of these will help to inform the MLAT's direction for ensuing years, about its many local projects, meeting presentations and healthy neighbourhood and well being initiatives.
Some examples of ideas for the future and already in action are as follows;

What could we deliver?
- Walkabouts:
- If police not on walkabouts then should focus on environmental issues, e.g. management of garden etc and liaise with TRAs about walkabouts in their area. (Engage with City Field Officers where appropriate)
- Sussex University currently have student community ambassadors on short termly periods wanting to become involved with community projects and they could help with reporting concerns if on Walkabouts. Could be involved with newsletter distribution to include recording any unsocial property issues.
- Report back in newsletter on common actions that result from walkabouts – e.g. hedges trimmed back or fly tipping cleared.
- Encourage online blogging and debate about areas of concern or from walkabout feedback.
- Areas of concern:
- monitor and report conditions in Wild Park woods, especially near Memorial.
- also include open 'greenland' e.g. woods behind Moulsecoomb Way.
- assist with relevant PSPO schemes and welcome input from local TRA's. (Public Space Protection Order)
- regularly note trends and habits of antisocial fly tipping
- Composting:
- liaise with School and Leisure Centre about a central community compost site and suggest TRAs look at sites for collections their areas.
- promote article in newsletter– BHCC subsidised composting scheme & garden waste scheme.
- Recycling:
- Need wider information campaign across newsletter, noticeboards and online to have more impact.
- Communications:
- Link clean-ups and recycling to national initiatives e.g. Keep Britain Tidy – coordinate calendar with national events and campaigns to raise profile.
- Promote schemes on Facebook and across community pages – liaise with Sussex Active student about social media volunteers to help with this.
- Have contacts for schemes and campaigns in newsletters and on website/ facebook.
- Erect new noticeboard at Leisure Centre car park site for local notices.
- Signpost local events in all methods possible including online social media.
- Regularly contact University community ambassadors about feeding intelligence into the MLAT area.
- Publish meeting minutes about themes and feedback on results of actions online and hard copy newsletter
- Committee continue posting news on Facebook social networking.
- Committee consider "Instagram" type apps to see if we can get younger people involved.

- TDC to discuss with Local Councillors & MP about information hosting community compost sites.
- note: put article on recycling & composting & green waste etc. in relevant newsletter and link to 'clean up' project with a local environmental theme. This will be led by a Community Development Worker.
Feeling Safe:
What are we doing?
- MLAT meetings regularly updated by BHA Amex Events team and BHCC Highways about 'event' parking controls and road safety.
- MLAT will continue to put information about local crime prevention and police contacts in newsletters.
Suggestions for committee to consider:
- Sussex Police website has neighbourhood stats that can be brought to meetings by the committee in the absence of our police colleagues attending, as they are always patrolling and on duty.
- Distribute messages of local ‘hot-spot’ status for drug dealing, county lines and 'cuckoo-ing', which needs constant reinforcement – possibly through articles or direct contact to everyone and also within TRA's.
- Where HMO issues are involved and thought to be students, it is possible to go through the university liaison officers for action, although they will only be able to act if confirmed as a student house. It is primarily a police matter if thought to be other renters, 'short-lets' or young professionals.
- Committee will regularly bring news of related crime incidents and stats to MLAT open meetings.
- Committee will link quarterly with citywide LAT Forum to report and also feedback from other groups.
Feeling well:
What are we doing?

- MLAT are still hoping to get outdoor gym equipment at Wild Park. Need more letters of support. (Interest & enthusiasm about a future local Skate Park)
- MLAT will continue to include a healthy affordable recipe in newsletters and try to invite the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership to a future meetings.
- MLAT advertise Neighbourhood Carer schemes in newsletter which tackles isolation.
- MLAT promotes 5 ways to wellbeing in newsletter.

Do an article on heart conditions –staying well and how to deal with an emergency. Maybe have them at regular Health Events.
- Promote schemes being run by community health groups – e.g. 'stop smoking start living' – promote 'Useful links' to infomercials on community website etc. See communications above.
